Multiple Islamic schools in Canada received emails, threatening to “slaughter” Muslims

In a blood-curdling email message to Islamic schools in Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec, threats were issued to “slaughter” Muslims.

It also vowed to make Canada “Islam free”.

The email was signed by a person calling himself “Citizen Vigilante”.

While police forces across several jurisdictions are investigating the threats, the email is a chilling reminder that Muslims are being targeted because of their faith.

The targeting of school children is especially troubling.

The nine Islamic schools that received the threatening emails are run by the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) that has been forced to hire paid security guards to keep students safe.

The psychological impact on young children is immense.

They had just started a new school year and were looking forward to learning and eager to make new friends.

Instead, they have been devastated by these latest threats.

Fearful for their children’s safety, some parents have not sent them to school after the email threats.

It is not only threatening and Islamophobic emails, there have been physical attacks on mosques and Muslims in Canada.

The most horrific terrorist attack occurred on the Quebec City Mosque on January 29, 2017.

Muslims were engaged in nightly prayer when a 28-year-old university student, Alexandre Bissonnette entered the mosque and started shooting at worshippers.

The heavily-armed terrorist murdered six worshippers in cold blood and injured 20 others before he was overpowered.

That somebody could be so full of hatred to shoot and kill people at their place of worship reflects the anti-Muslim environment that exists in Canada.

One of the persons killed in the terrorist attack was Khaled Belkacemi, professor at the University of Laval, where Bissonnette was also a student, although in a different department.

There have been a series of attacks on mosques and individuals across Canada.

In September 2020, a caretaker outside the mosque in Etobicoke (Toronto suburb) had his throat slashed and was killed by a white supremacist.

This was followed in June 2021 by an even more horrific crime.

The Afzaal family, out for an evening walk in London, ON., was deliberately mowed down by a pickup truck.

Five members of the family—husband and wife, two children and their grandmother—were waiting at an intersection for the light to turn green when a fast moving pickup truck deliberately ran over them.

To make sure they were dead, the driver, Nathaniel Veltman, reversed his truck and ran over them again.

The only survivor of this carnage was nine-year-old Fayez Afzaal, who sustained serious injuries.

Three generations of the Afzaal family were wiped out: 74-year-old grandmother, her son and his wife, and their daughter.

Their only crime was that they were Muslim.

Such terrorist attacks do not occur in a vacuum.

There is an entire eco-system that promotes hatred of Muslims, projecting them as the “other”.

Pro-Israeli groups are at the forefront of this hate campaign.

Segments of the media as well as opportunistic politicians are also part of the anti-Muslim campaign.

Despite these attacks, Islamophobia has not been declared a hate crime in Canada.

Muslims are asking why.

Statistics Canada’s latest data shows the number of police-reported hate crimes against Muslims rose by more than 170 per cent between 2020 and 2024.

The real figures are much higher. Not all hate crimes are reported to the police.

How many more Muslims must be murdered in cold blood and how many more Muslim children must live in fear or not go to school before the authorities take steps to declare Islamophobia a hate crime?

The message this sends to the hatemongers, racists and bigots is that it is alright to target and kill Muslims.
