The so-called war on terror has become truly bizarre; unable to find real terrorists, people are lured into a trap as became evident with the arrest on May 20 of four men in Newburg, New York. An FBI informant trapped four men outside a mosque that many believe were not even Muslims by offering to sell them “explosives” and a “stinger” missile to bomb a synagogue and blow up planes. So mosques are not infiltrated?

The British go one step further: the police storm houses in highly publicised raids to create the impression they are arresting terrorists, as happened last April (see story inside). Twelve Pakistani students were hauled and mauled but they were found innocent.

Other Western countries are no different. In Canada, a Muslim youth was pronounced guilty in what has come to be called the Toronto-18 case because he stole some equipment from a store that was allegedly to be used for terrorist purposes about which he knew nothing. The equipment was never used. A group of young boys were infiltrated by government agents who collected huge fees for their “services”.

Former US President George Bush used to say these people “hate our freedoms”. Perhaps, but it seems such freedoms are systematically being dismantled so that “terrorists” would have one less reason to hate the West. Muslims are targeted today but everyone’s basic rights are being taken away using fear and paranoia.
