Most Pakistanis will bristle at the suggestion that Hinduism guides their social, political and economic behaviour. True, the majority of Pakistanis claim to be ‘Muslim’. As proof, they can say that most of them pray regularly, fast in the month of Ramadan (not everyone!) and even perform Hajj.

Mosques are full of worshippers at prayer times but does that make any difference to their behaviour toward other people in society? Dishonesty and corruption are rampant, from the highest officials to the lowest ranks. The Pakistani elite flaunt their ill-gotten wealth while the poor, whose ranks are swelling by the day, live in abject poverty.

Let us probe the Hindu creed of Pakistanis a little further. In Hinduism, there is a hierarchy of castes. At the top of the caste pyramid reside the Brahmins. This tiny minority considers itself superior to all other castes. Inter-marriages are forbidden.

At the lowest rung are the ‘Untouchables’, also referred to as Dalits. They are literally treated as untouchables. They cannot use the utensils of the upper castes nor can they draw water from a well reserved for the Brahmins. They are forced to do the dirtiest jobs in society. Any infraction brings swift punishment, even death.

In Pakistan’s caste system, the military, more specifically the army sits at the top of the pyramid. Its chief acts as the head priest whose command, however ludicrous, must be obeyed.

Just like the Brahmins in India mistreat those of the lower castes, the Pakistan army is equally disdainful toward those beneath them, especially the masses.

Unable to fight external enemies, primarily India, the army wages war on its own people. The slaughter of innocent people in Balochistan and KP province provide ample proof. All this is done in the name of fighting ‘terrorism’ to draw America’s attention so that the mercenary army can fight on its behalf and get some dollars as bakhsheesh. This is what the army has done since 1958.

The army wallas are parasites. They suck the blood of the people to maintain their extravagant lifestyle. They have usurped all power and resources and are forever demanding more. While they do not fulfill their primary duty—defending the country’s borders—they have got their grubby hands on the country’s vital resources.

These include the choicest real estate, minerals, agricultural lands, factories of all kinds including cement, fertilizer, cornflakes and diapers. Yes, you read that correctly: the army is producing cornflakes and diapers!

The generals and brigadiers—an entire army of them—live in gated communities. They make their own deals with foreign governments. No input is sought from civilians. None is deemed necessary.

They look down upon civilians, referring to them as “bloody civilians”. The army high command decides who should sit in parliament, who is to be the prime minister or president and so on.

The great tragedy is that the generals have made a mess of everything they touch. It was the generals who created the East Pakistan crisis leading to the country’s break-up. They refused to accept the people’s verdict who had voted for the Awami League led by Shaikh Mujibur Rahman.

He was accused of being an Indian agent and wanted to break-up Pakistan. After perpetrating a horrible massacre of innocent Bengali civilians, the army then surrendered to the invading Indian army resulting in the country’s break-up in December 1971.

Unfortunately, not one general was charged with treason and punished. Had a few generals been hanged, today Pakistan would not be in such a mess. Further, the generals’ unbridled ambitions would be somewhat curtailed and they would not storm the corridors of power every few years.

The other castes in Pakistan comprise the politicians, the bureaucrats, judges and the police force. At the bottom of the pyramid reside the hapless masses, like India’s untouchables. Condemned to a life of misery and degradation, they toil for a morsel of food for their children.

There is another group—the clergy class, called maulvis in Pakistan—that has betrayed the people. Far from providing religious guidance, their primary function is to divide people along sectarian lines. They are willing to sell their souls for a sack of rupees.

The army has massive funds at its disposal—according to one estimated, the Fauji Foundation has assets worth $200 billion—and uses them to buy the maulvis, journalists and others to advance their nefarious agenda. The notorious intelligence agency, the ISI dispenses this bakhsheesh.

To understand the maulvis’ status in society, consider this. Nobody would give their daughter or sister in marriage to a maulvi.

Yet, when someone dies, their relatives seek the services of a maulvi to wash the dead person’s body. They also want the maulvi—yes the same maulvi they treat with contempt—to pray for the deceased to secure a place for him in paradise! Can it get any more absurd?

The great malaise in Pakistan is that almost everyone lives beyond their means. Showmanship is common. This is financed either through corruption—nothing gets done in Pakisan without bribing officials—or relying on remittances from relatives abroad.

Referred to as ‘overseas Pakistanis’, any time a disaster strikes—whether floods or earthquake—it is the overseas Pakistanis that are called upon to do their “patriotic duty”. It seems patriotism is their exclusively responsibility.

The elite live their rapacious lifestyle without contributing a penny to provide relief to the people. Instead, they even pilfer the money sent from abroad.

There is also the elite’s infatuation with protocol. Every punk and riot grrrl (the female equivalent of punk) demands elaborate protocol to show that he/she is important.

In Pakistan, it is very important to be important. But that is not enough: one has to be seen to be important, hence petty officials not fit to be doormen, insist on a long motorcade of vehicles accompanying their car when they travel. This is led by siren wailing motorcycles, and traffic is stopped for them so that the petty man or woman’s motorcade can pass through.

One wonders who is it that they are trying to impress. The masses have nothing but contempt for them but are helpless to do anything about it. If they had their way, they would drag these criminals into the street and beat them to death. That day may come.

There is also a debilitating mindset among the elite relating to the army’s role. Any criticism of its illegal intrusion into politics or its corruption immediately results in the charge of being anti-Pakistan. This then escalates to accusations of being an Indian or Israeli agent.

If India or Israel are the real enemies of Pakistan—they are—then one is constrained to ask what has the army done to confront them? The army high command shakes in their boots when India’s name is mentioned.

As for Israel, the army is keen to establish relations with the zionist monstrosity. Numerous secret meetings have occurred.

Unless the elite shed their slave mentality and stop worshipping the army—the real enemy of the people and of Pakistan—the country will not make progress.
