Only Islamic Iran truly embodies the principles for which NAM was established: aligned neither with the East nor the West.

In a wide-ranging address on August 30 to the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran, Imam Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Rahbar (Leader) of the Islamic Revolution offered a concrete framework for creating a world order free from the domination and exploitation of imperialist powers.

Imam Khamenei pointed to the imperialists’ hypocrisy by stating that “the security of America and Europe is considered important, while the security of the rest of humanity is considered unimportant. Torture and assassination are permissible and completely ignored if they are carried out by America, the Zionists and their puppets. It does not trouble their conscience that they have secret prisons in various places on different continents, in which defenceless prisoners who have no legal representation and have not been tried in a court of law are treated in the most hideous and detestable way.”

He also called for a world free from the scourge of nuclear weapons. Imam Khamenei condemned US-zionist hypocrisy in decrying Iran’s peaceful nuclear program while both regimes have thousands of such weapons between them. The US is also the only country in the world to have used such weapons against defencless civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Offering a concrete but flexible and rational framework for the global community to build their cooperation within NAM, the Rahbar acknowledged global diversity and called on the international community represented at the NAM summit to bring to an end the expired and oppressive UN Security Council veto system that serves only the Western imperialist agenda.

As a preliminary step to facilitate this process, Islamic Iran has already started negotiations with 60 NAM countries to drop visa requirements and make travel and trade easier. There are also behind the scenes talks led by Iran to establish a new and alternative financial global structure independent of the collapsing Western-designed exploitative system.

The suffering of the Palestinians was not forgotten either. Imam Seyyed Khamenei once again underlined the importance of an Islamic solution to the occupation of Palestine. He stated: “all the Palestinians – both the current citizens of Palestine and those who have been forced to migrate to other countries but have preserved their Palestinian identity, including Muslims, Christians and Jews – should take part in a properly supervised and confidence-building referendum and choose the political system of their country, and all the Palestinians who have suffered from years of exile should return to their country and take part in this referendum and then help draft a Constitution and hold elections.”

The NAM summit took place in defiance of imperialist and Zionist blackmailing tactics. This is significant in itself. What is even more significant is that only Islamic Iran truly embodies the principles for which NAM was established: aligned neither with the East nor the West. Regrettably, past NAM chairmen—Egypt under Hosni Mubarak was the last one—were all subservient to one or the other arrogant power.

With Islamic Iran assuming NAM leadership for the next three years, we are likely to see a more robust international participation by NAM members, especially at the UN that has been reduced to a tool in the hands of the oppressive imperialist powers and their lackeys, such as the illegitimate Zionist regime.

The world may be on the verge of a new order free from exploitation and oppression of the imperialists and Zionist in which the international community represented by masses in the ‘Third World’ will taste the fruits of freedom and enjoy their inalienable rights. The reinvigorated NAM platform offers a ray of hope.
