At 1.2 billion people, India is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, second only to China. But India suffers from some very serious problems of which the alarming rise in Hindu fascism is the most troubling. Minorities live under constant threat and are routinely attacked. These have escalated since Narendra Modi became prime minister in 2014.

During heightened tensions with Pakistan last month, Hindu zealots went on a rampage attacking Kashmiris working or studying in India. While India clings to the fiction that Kashmir is its integral part — a claim nobody in the world accepts — it does not want the Kashmiris. Hindu zealots have also been involved in torching the homes of hundreds of Muslims in different parts of the country. Muslims in India are seen as suspects and Pakistan sympathizers. The police look on as spectators while Muslim homes are torched.

When a card-carrying member of the Hindu terrorist outfit, RSS, is the prime minister of India, minorities face a grim future. India faces many problems: mass poverty and homelessness, and every place is an open-air toilet. If Modi were to concentrate on building toilets (549 million people are without one), the stink in India would subside somewhat. Take a broom, not a gun!
