UN Hypocrisy Over Syria

After several days of debate, the UN Security Council unanimously approved on February 24 a resolution calling for a 30-day truce in Syria. The resolution said “humanitarian aid” was needed in eastern Ghouta, the suburb of Damascus that is still under the control of foreign-backed terrorists. They have been firing missiles and rockets into densely populated areas of the capital of 8 million whose well-being apparently escaped the concern of the Western do-gooders in the Council.

War is absolutely terrible. Its victims are mostly innocent civilians. This is especially true in Syria where myriad mercenary groups armed and financed by the US, Israel, Turkey, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia have flooded into the country to overthrow the legitimate government of President Bashar al-Asad. The government has fought back and with the help of its allies, has managed to cleanse much of the country of the terrorist groups.

The terrorists, however, still control small pockets of territory; eastern Ghouta is one of them where some 30,000 terrorists and their families are present. The terrorists continue to fire missiles into Damascus. In retaliation, Syrian ground forces and air force have carried out operations against them. There are casualties on both sides but the West’s concern is confined only to civilians in eastern Ghouta as if the lives of other Syrians do not matter.

After the Security Council vote, Syria’s UN ambassador Bashar al-Ja‘fari said the people in Damascus were suffering due to the actions of the terrorists in eastern Ghouta. “The appeals of eight million Syrians do not reach the General Secretariat or the mailboxes of Britain’s and France’s representatives, but the appeals of terrorists do reach them,” he said.

Russia’s UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, added the ceasefire would not work without agreements between warring factions and he assailed what he called propaganda over the situation in terrorist-controlled eastern Ghouta. “We know that the humanitarian situation in Syria is dire and requires urgent measures to be taken,” he said. “It is important to engage not just with eastern Ghouta,” Nebenzia added. “Assistance needs to be delivered to all parts of Syria.”

The Western regimes’ concern for civilians in eastern Ghouta is totally contrived. They do not care for any human life other than their own. The same goes for the Saudis, the principal backers of terrorists in Syria. The Saudis have murdered more than 12,000 civilians in Yemen; at least 22 million of its 24 million people are on the verge of starvation due to a Saudi siege. The Saudis demand a ceasefire in Syria to send “humanitarian aid” to the people in eastern Ghouta but would not allow any food or medicines to be delivered to Yemen. The Saudis’ real aim is to save their favorite terrorists in Syria from being annihilated.

The Security Council vote was delayed because Russia and Syria insisted the truce should not include Da‘ish, al-Qaeda and al-Nusrah Front terrorists (the latter has now changed its name to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham!). The final text specifies that operations may continue against “individuals, groups, undertakings, and entities” associated with the so-called Islamic State, al-Qaeda or other groups designated by the Security Council as terrorists.

The West and its Arabian allies’ quest to save the terrorists in Syria is to work on their plan to divide the country. Syria and its allies have so far frustrated this diabolical plot.
