Throughout history, Americans have targeted minorities in their midst — Native and African Americans, Chinese and Japanese, to name a few — and blamed them for all their troubles. Muslims in the US are the latest victims. They are often told to grin and bear it, and that this phase will pass. It is unlikely because what is happening has different dimensions.

The US has been defeated in two Muslim countries. After spending two trillion dollars on two wars — Afghanistan and Iraq — the US is not only faced with military defeat but also economic ruin. While any dimwit could have told them not to venture into these lands, and some even did, how does one deal with imperial hubris and arrogance borne of military might? The Americans had to be taught this lesson the hard way.

This is where the trouble for Muslims in the US — indeed in the West in general — starts. They are being blamed for the West’s defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan. The draconian laws passed in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, attacks on masjids and on Muslims in general have continued unabated. American agencies have expanded their wars into Pakistan and other Muslim lands but ultimately, these will all fail because America is failing.

Muslims in the West, however, will be made to pay the price of America’s imperial hubris. So much for freedom and democracy that the West tries to export to the rest of the world! Maybe, they should keep some of it at home.
