Palestinians bury infants killed in Israeli air raids. Such scenes are routine for Palestinians that have suffered decades of Israeli oppression.

Canadians overwhelmingly (84%) support the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) investigation of war crimes, including those committed by Israel.

The results of a survey jointly sponsored by Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME—http://cjpme.org) with Independent Jewish Voices Canada and the United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine-Israel were released today.

The results of an EKOS Canada-wide survey “demonstrate that the Canadian government’s pro-Israel policies are totally out-of-sync with what Canadians really want,” CJPME said it its press release.

The survey findings revealed that “a huge majority of Canadians, 84%, believe that the International Criminal Court (ICC) should investigate war crimes wherever they may occur, including Israel.”

EKOS Research Associates (https://www.ekos.com/) conducted a national online survey of 1,009 Canadians, between June 5-10, 2020.

The survey asked respondents’ political party affiliation as well.

Despite the Liberal government’s default position of supporting Israel, 95% of Liberal Party supporters and 99% of NDP supporters said they would support ICC’s investigation into war crimes.

It is clear that the Canadian government is not only going against the wishes of the vast majority of Canadians (84%) but also against almost all of its own supporters (95%).

Last February, the Canadian government wrote a letter to the ICC trying to dissuade the Court from investigating Israeli war crimes.

South of the border, the Trump regime on September 2 imposed sanctions on the ICC because its chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda called for investigation of possible war crimes during Israel’s war on Gaza in 2014 and by US troops in Afghanistan.

Washington had also announced last March that it was revoking ICC officials’ visa to the US but failed to prevent their appearance at the UN Security Council in New York because the world body is exempt from US unilateralism.

The newly-minted Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole has said that if his party were elected, he would move Canada’s embassy to Jerusalem.

Such a move is opposed by a majority of Conservative Party supporters as well.

As for pro-Israeli groups in Canada, they would (mis)interpret the latest EKOS findings as further ‘proof’ that anti-Semitism is rising in Canada.

Otherwise, why would the vast majority of Canadians want Israel to be investigated for war crimes?
