Even circumspect Canadian journalists have been forced to speak out against the award given Harper’s record of shutting human rights organizations and riding rough shod over democratic norms. Bob Hepburn of the Toronto Star wrote on the editorial page: “Stephen Harper’s democracy award a sad joke on Canadians.”

When does a third-rate politician become a “world statesman”? When he/she dances to the Zionist tune and is proud to do so. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is well known for his extreme pro-zionist policies that have aroused concern even among seasoned Canadian diplomats. Those retired from active service have publicly chastised him for such cravenness to the Zionists.

Harper received the award in New York today from the Zionist organization, the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, for being a ‘champion of democracy, freedom and human rights’.

Hepburn is not a Palestinian supporter or a radical. Yet he was forced to write, “Clearly, though, the foundation either blatantly ignored or didn’t know that Harper is arguably the worst prime minister in history when it comes to defending democracy and human rights in Canada.”

This is strong stuff coming from the editor of a newspaper that traditionally takes middle of the centre position on most issues.

Harper has a long record of abusing democracy since he first assumed office in 2006. For two consecutive terms, he led a minority government but that did not deter him from abusing democratic norms such as proroguing parliament twice in one year to save his own skin. Regrettably, opposition politicians proved even more spineless to challenge him effectively.

In parliamentary elections last year (May 2011), there were allegations of calls made to voters sending them to wrong polling stations. Elections Canada received nearly 31,000 calls from voters in what came to be called the robocall scandal. In numerous ridings, the result was so close that the winning candidate’s margin was barely 18-20 votes. Such calls clearly subverted the electoral process since many Conservative candidates won by wafer thin margins.

Harper’s list of misdeeds is long. His regime shut down the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development (Rights & Democracy), slashed funding for the Canadian Human Rights Commission as well as cut funding to Kairos, a church group active in human rights work that had criticised Israel’s bombing of a Gaza health unit in the 2008-2009 Israeli assault. The government also cut funding to the Canadian Arab Federation because it had dared criticise one of the ministers!

Harper’s ministers have proudly declared cutting funding to human rights organizations during visits to the Zionist state and announced that Canada was the best friend of Israel. Canadians were appalled to hear that their elected officials are so enamoured to a foreign entity yet assaulting the fundamental rights of Canadian citizens.

In 2006, for instance, Harper slashed funding to the Status of Women Canada, that resulted in the agency shutting 12 of its 16 regional offices. In the same year, the minority regime closed the Court Challenges Program. Under it, women and immigrants in addition to other groups could get help to mount court challenges against discriminatory laws.

Harper is the only prime minister in Canadian history to be found guilty of contempt of Parliament.

He is also rabidly anti-Iran cutting off diplomatic relations with it on September 7 after his foreign minister made scandalous allegations against the Islamic Republic. This clearly endeared him even more to the zionists.

With such “impressive” credentials, it is not surprising that the Zionist outfit, Appeal of Conscience Foundation has given him its “Statesman of the Year” award. This is right up the alley of the Zionist crowd that is busy clubbing children to death in Palestine, or starving them to death as in the vast open air prison called Gaza, in the words of Conservative British Prime Minister David Cameron.
