The US and Saudi-backed regime in Bahrain continues to torture not only adults but also children. There is ample evidence about its horrible behaviour although it would be difficult to find much discussion of this in the Western media.

In US-backed Bahrain, people continue to suffer but there is little mention of their plight in the Western media. Similarly, the monarchical regimes that are busy sending arms and mercenaries into Syria are actually backing the illegitimate Bahraini regime, which not only tortures men and women but also children.

According to a Human Rights Watch report of August, “Bahrain security forces routinely detain children without cause and subject them to ill-treatment that may rise to the level of torture.” That has not aroused any concern in Washington where even false allegations against rulers the US does not like are talked up.

“Rounding up kids, throwing them in jail and beating and threatening them is no way for a country to treat its children,” said Joe Stork, Middle East and North Africa Director at Human Rights Watch (HRW). “The Bahraini authorities need to look into these allegations and immediately call a halt to any arbitrary arrests and mistreatment of children.”

Reports of the Bahraini regime’s oppression and torture of children and adults come from statements of victims, family members, and local rights activists. They say the regime often holds children for long periods in detention and subjects them to similar forms of mistreatment as adult detainees, including beatings and threats of torture.

Such mistreatment is in violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The regime is required to protect children from ill-treatment, confinement and torture.
