The judicial murder of Muhammad Afzal Guru once again highlights the brutal nature of Indian democracy. The west, however, is not going to do anything about it.

The murder by hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru in India’s notorious Tihar Jail is all too familiar to the Kashmiris. As your report pointed out, Maqbool Butt, another Kashmiri freedom fighter, was hanged in the same prison in February 1984. The Indian Supreme Court admitted that it had no direct evidence of Afzal Guru’s involvement in the December 13, 2001 attack on the Indian parliament. Yet it had to convict him because the public demanded it! That India’s highest court succumbed to mob sentiment is not surprising. In the self-proclaimed biggest democracy in the world, killing innocent people, especially the Kashmiris, is routine. The Kashmiris’ blood will not go in vain. India will pay a heavy price for such crimes, sooner rather than later.
