Ghada Sadaka is principal of Sir Wilfrid Laurier P.S. in Markham. The York Region District School Board is investigating allegations that anti-Muslim postings were put up on a Facebook page under Sadaka's name. (FACEBOOK)

Canada is a multicultural country but this is no guarantee against racist teachers. The case of one School principal in York Region (same locality where Crescent is based) has brought to the fore the danger of such people poisoning young minds.

Canada takes pride in multiculturalism. It is presented on world platforms as a model for others to emulate. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that Canada is strong not despite but because of its diversity.

This message from the prime minister’s office seems not to have reached all people. Take the example of one school principal in York Region just outside the city of Toronto. Ghada Sadaka, a principal with a Muslim name, has shown extreme hatred toward Muslims. She has put hateful messages against Muslims on her Facebook page.

One expects people in the field of education to be tolerant and respectful of others. After all, they are tasked with imparting values to young minds that are the future of Canada. When teachers themselves begin to spread hatred, what hope can one have in such a system?

Not surprisingly, hundreds of parents in York Region have written to the York Region Board of Education demanding her removal from the position. The Board has so far not taken any action although it said it is conducting its own inquiry into the matter but is refusing to share any information with concerned parents.

What confidence can parents have in such a system when school boards that claim to uphold values of tolerance and respect, show such scant regard for the concerns of Muslim parents? It seems Islamophobia is tolerated in a society where anti-Jewish and anti-Black statements would be dealt with immediately and firmly. Why the double standard?
