On July 15 it was reported that CNN was eliminating 100 jobs and aiming to switch to paywall services on its website.

CNN’s announcement is merely a symptom of the larger credibility problem western media outlets face which propagate narratives and interests of western regimes.

Technological advancement has levelled the media playing field somewhat.

Gone are the days when BBC, CNN and other media outlets shaped the framework of discussion for the global public.

As local news organizations have acquired technical skills in the field of media, western narratives are now widely challenged and others have begun to formulate their own framework on key global issues.

Prior to delving deeper into an analysis of the state of western media today, it is necessary to state that we consider all media outlets as essentially propaganda tools for their billionaire owners and the western regimes.

All media outlets propagate a certain worldview.

Their reporting is agenda-driven.

Media outlets that claim that their work is driven primarily by “objectivity” are simply trying to camouflage their propaganda narrative.

Those observers who closely monitor the propaganda work of Russian, Chinese or South American media know that in terms of production quality, western outlets still enjoy some technical advantage.

Nevertheless, as can be seen from media pushback on the wars in Syria, Ukraine and Palestine, the production advantage does not compensate for their credibility crisis.

During the initial few months of the large scale Russian military intervention in Ukraine, western regimes enjoyed significant advantage in the information war against Russia.

Yet, within less than a year, their advantage declined significantly.

On the information front, the Ukraine war was easy for the western regimes to win.

At a superficial level, the conflict could be framed in black and white terms.

This was done during the first few months of the war.

It is, however, no longer the case.

Increasingly, people worldwide and some western intellectuals started to question the simplistic western propaganda narrative relating to the war in Ukraine.

If the conflict in Ukraine raised doubts about western media reporting, the ongoing genocide in Palestine has buried all possibilities for western media’s return to dominance.

Blatant pro-Israeli propaganda and constant demonization of the Palestinian resistance has eliminated virtually all doubts about the camouflage of “objectivity” preached by western media talking heads.

As the geopolitical clout of western regimes continues to decline, their propaganda work also gets sloppier.

On July 4, the so called “prestigious” Forbes magazine published an outlandish claim that “the Russian military has reportedly lost 99,000 troops since the start of the Chasiv Yar campaign in April.”

Forbes’ fantastic claim was not called out by any serious western media outlets.

The analysis presented on the state of western media is just the tip of the iceberg comparison to what is yet to come.

As western global influence continues to decline rapidly, western regimes will indulge in desperate attempts to try to retain their unsustainable narratives on the information front.

This will create a media vacuum worldwide and provide the non-western world with a unique opportunity to position their media organizations as global trend setters.

This can only be achieved if the Global South diligently improves its media work via factual and sophisticated media techniques.

Blatant propaganda peddled by the likes of CNN or RT will no longer work.
