While he had repeatedly said that he would pull the US out of the multilateral Iran nuclear deal, Donald Trump’s announcement on May 8 still came as a shock.
He resorted to the same blatant lies that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had trotted out on April 30. The Zionist’s lies were a rehash of those that were first aired—and totally discredited—in 2004.
Trump called the Iran nuclear deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) “decaying and rotten”. It is a certainty that he does not know the full details of the deal because he is ignorant and suffers from attention deficit disorder.
He threatened to impose even more severe economic sanctions that were waived when the deal was signed in 2015.
Trump also trotted out a long list of ludicrous demands—Iran must stop its ballistic missile program, end its regional interference and stop its aggressive policies toward Israel—for the US to restart negotiations with Iran.
Why would Iran want to negotiate with an absolute lunatic? This simple fact naturally escapes Trump.
Iranian officials have repeatedly stressed they would restart uranium enrichment if the nuclear deal were violated.
President Hassan Rouhani of Iran said: “The US has announced that it doesn’t respect its commitments.”
Instead of making an immediate decision, he said he would “wait a few weeks” to speak to allies and the other signatories to the nuclear deal first.
In addition to the US, other signatories to the deal include Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany. They have all indicated they would like to uphold the deal. The European Union Foreign Policy Chief, Frederica Mogherini also said she would like to see the deal upheld.
President Rouhani said “If we achieve the deal’s goals in cooperation with other members of the deal, it will remain in place.”
It took nine years to arrive at the deal. At the outset, Iran had stated that this was a deal about its nuclear program—which was totally peaceful—but it would accept curbs on it for a specified period.
Tehran, however, made clear it was not open to discussions on any other issues. This was accepted at the outset before Iran proceeded with nuclear negotiations. Yet Trump is making new demands.
What this shows is that the US cannot be trusted to uphold any deal, even one that was signed by top US officials. The Iran deal is a multilateral deal that has been endorsed even by UN Security Council resolution 2231. Thus, it has international standing.
The allegations that Trump made in announcing Washington’s withdrawal are also based on lies. Iran is not cheating on its commitment. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has instituted the most stringent inspections in its history. It has on 11 separate occasions certified that Iran is in full compliance of its obligations.
This was another point Iran had insisted on during negotiations: that the IAEA rather than any other body certify its compliance.
Iranian officials rightly feared that Western regimes would begin to indulge in political theatrics and make all kinds of excuses to not uphold the deal.
This is precisely what has happened with the US. When countries sign agreements, these are not with a specific regime but with a state.
Clearly, the US cannot be trusted to do anything right. It never acts in good faith.
Trump and his equally arrogant officials have said European companies must end their dealings with Iran within six months or they would be subjected to US sanctions.
For Iran the choice is clear: it must take immediate steps to protect its interests. It cannot rely on Western promises—or even signed agreements—to uphold their part of the bargain.
There were many people in Iran and outside that feared that the US would not fulfill its commitments. Trump has proved their worst fears.
His walking away from the deal has also made the world a more dangerous place. Another US-Israeli-led war in the Middle East cannot be ruled out. This time, it would involve Iran, Hizbullah and Syria and could quickly engulf the entire region.
Judging by the US’ earlier experiences in warfare and bloodshed, this time around, it is quite possible that the illegitimate Zionist entity itself may disappear from the face of the earth.
