Why is it that so many tears have been shed for the children killed in Newtown, Connecticut while US President Obama routinely orders the killing of innocent children and women in other parts of the world without a thought spared for their plight?

Dear Mr. President,

I will not waste your precious time in conveying condolences on the tragic event at the elementary school in Newtown. I am sure you are overwhelmed by messages pouring in from across the globe. Instead, it is more relevant to ask a few questions: Why does the majority of the world consider child killings in the US a tragedy but conveniently ignore child killings in Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia, the Philippines, Iraq and Palestine?

In November, 42 Palestinian children were murdered in Gaza by the US-funded Israeli war machine. Why does the Western media, which lamented the senseless killing of innocent children in Newtown, ignore or accept the official version that those killed by US drones are all “militants”? Are the children of northwest Pakistan different from American children? Does blood not flow in their veins?

We are told that the Newtown killer was mentally challenged; we are left wondering about the mental state of those responsible for killing hundreds of children in Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia, Philippine, Iraq and Palestine. Should such people — whether civilian or military officials including the US president — not undergo regular mental examination to ascertain their sanity?
